Hyatt Regency, Savannah, Georgia

COD members, Dr. Johnnye M. Jones, Dr. Barbara E.M. Cannon, Dr. Dorothy Pennington, and Dr. Marjorie Harris met with the African American Monument Association in Savannah, Georgia.

A total of 19 members of the AAMA were in attendance, including local elected officials, State Representatives, local physician, church officials, public relations/fund raising volunteers, the media documentation committee chair, AAMA secretary, volunteers, and other members.

The elected officials were supportive and provided excellent recommendations to insure comprehensive community-wide support for funding, installing and completing the monument in Savannah, Georgia.  They encouraged inclusive approaches.

The members and volunteers present also indicated ways to inspire and motivate community-wide funding efforts.  One of the recommendations was implemented the same evening of the September 1 meeting, i.e. the COD members: Dr. Jones, Dr. Cannon, and Dr. Harris were invited to appear on a live radio show in Savannah to discuss the partnership and collaboration strategies to motivate local residents of Savannah.

The Public Relations and media specialist in the group shared their approaches and the special T-shirts that are being sold.  The T-shirts say “Let Our Rejoicing Rise.”  T-shirts are available at $12 each.  Orders may be placed by sending checks payable to African American Monument Fund.  Mail checks to:

COD members are writing proposals and following up with others in the COD sisterhood.  Dr. Joyce Moore-Stevall of Leavenworth, Kansas has submitted four outstanding proposals to 4 well known Foundations that fund museums, monuments, historic treasures, etc.

COD members are being encouraged to develop proposals to funding sources and to convey what they are doing and submit copies to Dr. Johnnye M. Jones at Jarvis Christian College, P.O. Box 1470, Hawkins, TX 75765.

COD members should submit their pledges and contributions directly to our COD Treasurer, Dr. Pennie E. Perry.  Dr. Perry will keep all of the COD funds together and provide Dr. Jones and Dr. Cannon with regular updates regarding the COD level of contributions for the monument.

Dr. Jones and Dr. Cannon will provide updates via our COD newsletters and other methods.  We urge each COD sister to keep in touch with each of us.

"We were stolen, sold and bought together from the African Continent. We got on the slave ship together. We lay back to belly in the holds of the slave ships in each others excrement and urine together, sometimes died together, and our lifeless bodies thrown overboard together. Today, we are standing up together, with faith and even some joy..."
