| THE MONUMENT |
The Monument is a 6 foot tall bronze figure with a 4 by
3.6 foot base made of granite and bronze. The solid granite base
will easily withstand the forces of nature according to the
sculptor, Dorothy Radford Spradley.
Dr. Abigail Jordan who came up with the idea, unveiled a model of
the monument during a City Council workshop on Thursday Morning,
May 21, 1998 in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Jordan explained as she
pointed to the model: "Do you see these chains and hands on
the side of the model? They are breaking away from slavery and
becoming a family again" The Council unanimously voted in
open session to support the monument. The sculpture depicting a
black family of four embracing with chains at their feet will be
placed in Rousakis Plaza on River Street.
APPROVED WORDING FOR THE MONUMENT:
|
"We were stolen, sold and bought
together from the African Continent. We got on the slave
ship together. We lay back to belly in the holds of the
slave ships in each others excrement and urine together,
sometimes died together, and our lifeless bodies thrown
overboard together. Today, we are standing up together,
with faith and even some joy..."
